COVID-19 Coronavirus Disinfection Team

With the latest outbreak of human infection with the COVID-19 coronavirus affecting hundreds of people around the world in early 2020, various discussions and precautions have been taken around the world to help contain and control the spread of the disease around the world. As governments and health agencies strive to control the situation on a global scale, they urge the general public to take precautions and modest hygiene measures to avoid contamination.

What is COVID-19 Coronavirus?

Coronavirus (CoVs) is a group of viruses that affect people and cause a variety of symptoms, from the common cold to Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-Cov).  The virus is very dangerous because it can be spread and transmitted between different species, increasing the likelihood of its spread on a global scale.

What are the Symptoms of Coronavirus COVID-19?

Coronavirus COVID-19 affects the human body in a way similar to a cold or other respiratory illnesses, with coughing, sneezing and difficulty breathing.  In more severe cases, people can develop pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and eventually death. At the end of January, more than 300 deaths from coronavirus COVID-19 had been confirmed 14, 000 new infections were also reported.

The CDC considers the risk of contamination if you have close contact with an infected person within 6 feet and over a long period of at least 30 minutes.  If flu-like symptoms appear after contact with an infected person, seek immediate medical attention.

How to Prevent Infection?

It is important to avoid certain areas where a high virus incidence is reported.  As it passes through the surface and air, it is important to keep your respiratory system clean and free from contamination. Standard measures to prevent pollution are:

  • Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with an alcohol-based handkerchief containing at least 60% alcohol. Wash you hands regularly, especially if you come into contact with surfaces in public areas.

  • Do not touch you eyes, nose and mouth when touching surfaces, ATMs, elevator buttons, bars, benches and stands on the road. The virus spreads through contact with you mucous membranes and enters your body through certain areas.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue if you cough and remove it immediately.  Pay attention to those around you, if they are also constantly coughing.

  • Clean and remove surfaces that are often touched by some people.  With the increase risk of cross-contamination, it is very important to ensure that surfaces and objects are virus-free.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are clearly ill or exhibiting flu-like symptoms not associated with coronavirus COVID-19.

  • Avoid social contact if you have mild flu symptoms or low immunity.  If your symptoms get worse, get medical help right away.

  • Do not go to high risk countries.

What is Environmental Disinfection? Why is it Important?

One of the most common routes of COVID-19 coronavirus contamination is through contact with contaminated surfaces.  In other words, the virus can settle on different surfaces and remain inactive until it comes into contact with the human body. A number of viruses are known to survive on dry surfaces for more than 3-7 days.

By touching the contaminated surface and touch the rear eyes, mouth and nose, individuals manually introduce the virus into their mucosa, where it then infiltrates the body. It is therefore very important to keep the surface clean and to clean it properly for patient safety and for the tidiness of offices and public areas.

In addition, the environmental disinfection process includes cleaning and disinfection procedures that must be performed by a trained professional. In cases where the population is at risk of spreading infection, it is important that personnel dealing with these potential hazards are adequately trained to avoid further spread of the virus and cross contamination.

More importantly, disinfection of contaminated surfaces also requires strong chemical treatment, as cleaning with detergent is known not to eliminate microbial contamination and can even spread contamination from one surface to another. Therefore, it is important to carefully evaluate the area and ensure that the correct personnel are performing the cleaning procedure. This may include the use of hydrogen peroxide and chlorinated agents with the formulation of quarterly ammonium compounds that must be handled properly and with proper practice.

High-risk environments such as hospitals, schools, office buildings, and other high- traffic areas must undergo environmental disinfection. Appropriate steps must be followed to clean the area in accordance with the Practical Guide for Infection Prevention and Control, use personal protective equipment and adhere to the protocol. Finally, potentially contaminated public areas should be disinfected with professional procedures to help prevent the spread of coronavirus COVID-19.

What are the risks of self-cleaning procedures?

Hospital staff and professional cleaners are equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE) that protects them from viral contamination and direct contact with the cleaning agent used. In do-it-yourself procedures, these materials are either absent or of low quality and can increase the likelihood of contamination for the person performing the procedure.

Also, as coronavirus COVID-19 is not yet fully understood, it is possible that it will benefit from improper cleaning procedures and spread further. For example, cleaning with the wrong shot can spread the virus to different surfaces, increasing the level of contamination.

What is the (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment Required for Professional Environment Disinfection?

All Professional cleaning personnel involved in disinfection areas with potential risk of coronavirus contamination should use the following:

  • N-95 mask or high level respirator

  • Eye protection or mask

  • Layers and disposable gloves

  • Shoe gloves

  • Surgical mask
